Nathalie Matteau & Les Hommes Perdus

De Frans-Canadese Nathalie Matteau (Montreal, Quebec) zingt vol overgave over de liefde en het leven — intens, zwoel, hartstochtelijk en eerlijk — in het besef dat alles uiteindelijk vergankelijk is. Haar cabareteske chansons noires roepen beelden op van het decadente nachtleven in de kroegen, clubs en theaters van Parijs en Berlijn tussen de twee wereldoorlogen, waar met volle teugen werd geleefd alsof iedere avond de laatste kon zijn.

  Een avond met Nathalie Matteau & Les Hommes Perdus is echter meer dan een nostalgische reis naar het verleden. De meeslepende liederen over allesverzengende liefdes, jaloezie, bedrog, afscheid en eenzaamheid, gaan over ons allemaal. Ze verhalen over pijn die we allemaal voelen maar waar we meestal discreet over zwijgen. Daarbij wordt geenszins bij de pakken neergezeten. Vitaal en vol levensdrang laat Matteau juist ook de schoonheid zien in de tragiek van alledag. Dit alles aanstekelijk verpakt in statige tango’s, zwierige walsen en opzwepende circushoempa, waarbij invloeden van jazz en blues nooit ver weg zijn. Geestdriftig zingt ze het publiek toe dat de tijd op niemand wacht. Het is alles of niets en nu of nooit.

In november 2008 formeert Matteau haar Nederlandse band ‘Les Hommes Perdus’ met Michael Breukers op accordeon & piano; Leon van Egmond op trombone & harmonica; Peter Dupont op saxofoons; Erik Potters op bombardon en Kees Swanenberg op drums. Met deze bijzondere bezetting weet Matteau snel grote indruk te maken op diverse podia en festivals zoals: ‘L’avventura’ en de ‘Nacht van de Verleiding’, Paradox, Tilburg; drie avonden Oerol in De Vijfpoort; ‘Elastiek Muziek–Tuin der Lusten’, Hilvarenbeek; ‘Festival Onderstroom’, Vlissingen en ‘Kunsten op Straat Festival’, Diepenheim.

Samen met haar band nam ze in mei 2009 haar eerste album op in de Amsterdamse IJland studio van Remko Schouten, getiteld Bloody Hands in Love. Dit album werd door het VPRO programma Shouting Boots (Radio 6) in augustus uitverkozen tot ‘Affengeile Schallplatte’ van de week. In september 2009 is Bloody Hands in Love uitgebracht door Sonic Rendez-Vous.

The French-Canadian Nathalie Matteau (Montréal, Québec) sings of love and life — intense, sultry, passionate, honest — with the awareness that everything eventually comes to an end. Her cabaret-style Chansons Noires are portraits, a reminiscence of the decadent nightlife in bars, clubs and theaters in Berlin and Paris between the two World Wars.

An evening with Nathalie Matteau & Les Hommes Perus is however more than a nostalgic voyage in the past. The songs are about searing passionate love, jealousy, deceit, parting, solitude. The songs are about all of us. She tells stories of pain, which we all feel but are more discreet about, pain that we silence. But by doing so, she is by no means giving up on life. And despite her impulsive and vital nature, Matteau also finds beauty in the tragic. All this through catchy, majestic tangos, gracefully swirling waltz and stirred up circus-oompah in addition to which influences from jazz and blues are never far away. She sings enthusiastically to her public that time waits for no man, that it is all or nothing, now or never.

In November 2008, Matteau formed her Dutch band “Les Hommes Perdus” with Michaël Breukers on accordion and piano, Leon van Egmond on trombone and harmonica, Peter Dupont on saxophones, Erik Potters on bombardon and Kees Swanenberg on drums. This unique formation made a big impression in a variety of venues and festivals such as: L’avventura ‘Nacht van de Verleiding’/Night of the Seduction, Paradox, Tilburg; three Oerol Festival evenings in the Vijfpoort; Elastiek Muziek-Tuin der Lusten, Hilvarenbeek; Onderstroom Festival, Vlissingen and ‘Kunsten op Straat Festival’/Arts on the Streets Festival, Diepenheim.

In May 2009, together with her band, she recorded her first full-length album “Bloody Hands In Love”, in Remko Schouten’s IJland Studio in Amsterdam. The following August the album was on the play-list of VPRO Radio 6 program ‘Schouting Boots’ and was chosen as ‘Affengeile Schallplatte’ (sultry, passionate) album of the week. Since September 2009, “Bloody Hands In Love” is distributed through Sonic Rendez-Vous.
